GPTCA Appoints Matsui as National President for Japan
The Global Professional Tennis Coach Association (GPTCA) is honored to announce the appointment of Toshihide Matsui as the new National President for Japan. A trailblazer both on and off the court, Matsui brings over two decades of competitive and leadership experience to the role.
A Champion in Play and Purpose
Toshihide Matsui is widely respected for his longevity, dedication, and service to tennis in Japan. A graduate of Brigham Young University–Hawaii, Matsui first made his mark internationally by representing Japan in the Davis Cup (2006, 2011) and later at the ATP Cup in both 2020 and 2021. His win–loss record in Davis Cup play stands at an impressive 4–1.
In 2006, Matsui was the singles runner-up at the Japanese National Championships, later dominating in doubles with six national titles—four with Satoshi Iwabuchi and two more with Kaito Uesugi in 2021 and 2022.
He’s not only a fierce competitor but also a pioneer: Matsui is the founder of the Japan Tennis Players Union, a significant step toward unifying and advocating for professional players in the country.
Record-Breaking Longevity
Currently 46 years old, Matsui is still active on the ATP circuit and holds the distinction of being the oldest active singles player in the ATP rankings. In February 2024, he reached a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 123, later improving it to No. 121 in May 2024—a rare feat at any age.
Notably, in 2019, he played the largest age-gap match in Challenger history when he faced 18-year-old Chun-hsin Tseng—showcasing his ongoing competitive spirit.
A Vision for Japanese Tennis
As GPTCA National President, Matsui will play a critical role in advancing coach education, mentoring young talent, and promoting professional standards across Japan’s tennis landscape. His unique combination of elite playing experience and off-court advocacy makes him exceptionally suited for this leadership position.
“Tennis has given me so much,” Matsui says. “Now it’s my turn to help shape its future in Japan by empowering the coaches and players who will lead the next generation.”
We are proud to have such a dedicated and accomplished figure at the helm. Please join us in congratulating Toshihide Matsui on his new appointment!
