Coach In The Spotlight - Norman Bingeser

As part of our regular 'Coach In The Spotlight' feature, we are holding a series of short interviews with GPTCA members sharing their coaching success story. We have this week put Norman Bingeser of Germany, our A level coach, in the hot seat and asked some quick fire questions.

1. What is your current work in progress?

I work as a head coach at Tennis Club Radolfzell, Germany.

2. How did you begin coaching pro players? How long have you been coaching?

I was still a National Level player when I started working with my teammate, Russian Pro Andrei Merinov - from there the journey continued. So I've been coaching since 1995.

3. What keeps you motivated to come to work each day and keep coaching through the years?

I have a great passion and love for the sport.

4. What skills/characteristics do you look for in your players?

They must live and breathe tennis. Besides, they must have knowledge and willingness to accept the fact that even the best players can improve.

5. What is the biggest challenge you've had as a coach and how did you overcome it?

One of my players lost his serving stroke completely (with over 30 double faults). We did some mental martial arts exercises.

6. What is your most successful coaching moment so far?

Tour: Anna Kournikova - 1999 Roland Garros 4th round in singles; runner-up in doubles.

Teamsport: Transforming Radolfzell from 4th League women and 5th League men within 5 years to two-time German Championship winners (women 2010, 2011) and moving up to 1. Bundesliga (men 2011).

7. What advice would you give to new coaches?

My advice would be to try and stay a lifelong student.

8. What inspires your work?

The philosophy of martial arts.

9. What is your next coaching goal?

My next goal is to transform the power of martial arts into tennis.
