C-Level Course in Myanmar Completed

The Myanmar Davis Cup team recently completed a GPTCA Level C Course in Yangon, Myanmar. The course was conducted by national president Robert Davis. The Level C course was originally scheduled for April 27-28 to coincide with the Davis Cup Group III and IV Asia/Oceania which Myanmar was hosting. However, with one week before the competition, the tournament was canceled due to security issues.

“Our team has been training very hard,” says Robert Davis. “And when the Davis Cup was canceled, everyone was naturally very disappointed. But then we decided to do the next right thing and use the opportunity to focus on the GPTCA Level C Course. Each of the players on the team teach tennis. Our number one player, Zaw Zaw Latt teaches in Singapore. And Nge Hnaung teaches in Malaysia. While Min Min and Aung Naing works with our top juniors at the Tennis Federation of Myanmar.”

The Tennis Federation of Myanmar has been very active in coaching education the last year. In addition to ITF coaching courses, the PTR conducted a clinic in December of 2012.

“I really enjoyed the GPTCA course,” says Min Min. “It was a lot of new information and I like all the on-court practical drills and training. Also, it is nice to hear how the top players on the ATP train and prepare. I am now looking forward to preparing for the Level B course.”

“What we are trying to do in Southeast Asia is work with Davis Cup teams,” says Davis. “Since they are usually the best players who also coach, we want to make sure that they have the latest information and support network that the GPTCA has to improve their juniors. And the course helps them as well as they continue to play domestically and for the national team. We have also had request from the Indonesia, Cambodia and Pakistan Davis Cup teams for GPTCA courses this year.”

Robert Davis announced that the next GPTCA course will be held in Yangon, Myanmar in December of 2013 at the 2nd Annual Myanmar International Tennis Project.
