Coach in the Spotlight - Esteban Carril

As part of our regular 'Coach In The Spotlight' feature, we are holding a series of short interviews with prominent GPTCA members sharing their coaching success story. We have put Esteban Carril, our A level coach in the hot seat and asked some quick fire questions.

1. What is your current work in progress?
I am working with Johanna Konta, WTA #18.

2. How long have you been coaching?
I began coaching Pro Players back in 2005.

3. What keeps you motivated to come to work each day and keep coaching through the years?
I enjoy helping others on their way to find improvement, progress, success and performance, to become better.

4. What skills/characteristics do you look for in your players?
I look for humbleness that allows them understand that only hard work makes you better, courage to face the challenges and ambition to go farther.

5. What is the biggest challenge you've had as a coach and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I've had as a coach is to find personal balance when giving everything to make someone better. This challenge is permanent.

6. What is your most successful coaching moment so far?
I can´t pick one moment, fortunately I have several of them in my memory, from both men and women, and many of them came while overcoming huge challenges.

7. What advice would you give to new coaches?
Winning while loosing which means staying in the process and appreciating "the structures" rather than results. Give to receive.

8. What inspires your work?
My work is inspired by certain books and a constant strive to become better.

9. What is your next coaching goal?
My coaching goal is to make sure my player keeps acquiring marginal gains to become better both as a player and as a person.
